Most of the furniture you buy these days is deliberately designed to fall apart.

Depending on its quality, some furniture does stick around for a while, but a large amount of it is designed and built cheaply to be landfilled after just a couple of years of use. The industry wants you to buy more new stuff.

That is bad for the environment and bad for your wallet.

... is probably your furniture. Shelving is usually made from pressed wood like plywood, MDF, particleboard or fibreboard. What you probably don't know, is that pressed wood contains high levels of formaldehyde; a highly toxic substance which evaporates over years and causes cancer*.
